Abstract

Objectives: As we know QUS method (Quantitative Ultrasound) uses ultrasound waves (not X-ray) for bone mineral densitometry and someone think that it measures also elasticity and microarchitecture. This study assesses the relation between female reproductive factors and calcaneus QUS parameters in normal women of Tehran/Iran. Material and Methods: BMD of heel in 151 normal women, 20-72 Y/O (participator of Iranian Multicenter Osteoporosis Study)was assessed using Achilles+ (GE-Lunar) device. Stiffness Index(SI) percentiles (2.5, 50 and 97.5) in these women were established. With consideration of correlation between variables, multiple regression analysis was done. Results: Mean values of SOS (speed of sound), BUA (broad-band ultrasound attenuation) and SI was 36/75±1527/25, 121/42 ±15/1, 94/46±17/92, respectively. QUS parameters showed a significant decrease with age (p<0/01). Only years since menopause showed significant relation with all QUS parameters (SOS, BUA and SI) and age of menopause had a significant relation with two of three QUS parameters (SOS and SI). Conclusion: This study showed effectiveness of some reproductive factors on QUS parameters.
